Never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Homeless or about to become homeless?  Know someone that is homeless?

Social Security has several programs that pay benefits to qualified homeless individuals.  These programs include retirement, disability, and survivors’ benefits, as well as Supplemental Secuirty Income, which is a needs-based program for people who are blind, disabled, or age 65 or older. Social Security...

I know this is a long shot and not usually what you get involved in, but this family is desperate.  During the tornado in Joplin MO a family lost their beloved American Bulldog, Hanah when she was ripped from her mothers arms when their house was destroyed.  They thought she had been killed, but she has been spotted alive at least twice since the tornado. We were wondering, just on the...

Wyatt (2 years) and Morgan (4 years) are lab mixes.   Their dad, Ted, lost his job and all three live in a trailer in the desert without hookups.  The trailer is near a chicken coop that is not kept clean.  Both dogs ate chicken poop and got a bad case of bloody diarrhea and bloody vomiting.  Pets of the Homeless helped both these pets.  We set up an apt for the emergency...

Most homeless shelters do not allow pets.  When Pets of the Homeless hears of one we are pleased beyond words!  This is one way to give homeless the services that they need to get out of homelessness with their companions.  This is the latest to our list.

Each month we get hundreds of emails.  We answer each with thoughful advice and as with as many resources that we have available.

Here are some examples-

From John in California:

Although I am not homeless, I am jobless and also have five cats.  I am finding it very difficult to feed them with no income.

Do you or anyone else have any programs available for people...

Ken White, President, Peninsula Humane Society;

“Two topics which each, separately, invite a strong and often highly emotional response, put the phrase "homeless people" and "pets" into the same sentence and it's likely a controversial if not explosive conversation will follow. And if that's explosive, instead of the same sentence try putting them into the same broken down van or homeless...

I love what you do!

When I was first out of school, we had a homeless man named Bill.  He had a German Shepard that went everywhere with him.  Every year he would come in for his rabies shot and would pay us $5 because he wouldn't take charity. The SPCA took his dog away because he didn't provide shelter for it. Bill didn't have shelter, for goodness sake.  I told the investigator...

From a volunteer of Pets of the Homeless, she was making a delivery of pet food to a homeless center in Reno, NV.

I was on Record Street yesterday.  As I drove through the parking lot in my nice warm SUV, I was touched by the site of so many people trying to stay warm.  One woman was sitting quietly on a box with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders...

Sadly many visits to Pets of the Homeless website are from people about to become homeless or who are homeless with pets.  One young woman wrote:  "Hello. I just came across your web page. I too am about to be homeless (with a 9 yr old Samoyed dog) I live in Marin/Sonoma area of California.  I can't find anywhere that I can have my precious pup.  So I'm going to be sleeping...

Had a pretty good day for a Tuesday
On the street corner down by the mall.
Got two dollars here and three dollars there
And pretty soon thirteen in all.
And Dusty was cheerful as ever,
For reasons I can’t even say,
But when everything fails he’s still wagging his tail,
All in all, had a pretty good day.

For dinner we got Number Seven,

I just finished reading "Breakfast at Sally's" by Richard LeMieux.   Be sure to have a box of tissues handy for this inspirational book.  I highly recommend this memorable book.

For an insight to what it means to be homeless read it. This true and touching journey of a man with depression and his little dog Willow, refutes stereotypes about the homeless. Once you read...

How does one help someone in the streets with an animal aside from giving her/him some money?

I met a woman in Chicago with a cat in her cage just last month. They were homeless. All I could do was hand her some money? What does one do. Can't take them home with me. We have pets of our own (cats and dogs).

If I can find her again, what do I say to her--where to go for help--where...

There have been comments about some homeless treating their animals with cruelty; dogs tied up tightly, twisting to be freed or being hit; skinny dogs/cats in poor health.  As in the case of child abuse, such instances of animal abuse clearly call for action.  Any such treatment, should be reported to the local Animal Control or Humane Society.  They are the agencies that can help...

Reduce Estate Tax with Charitable Giving

In 2011, America’s wealthiest families will be looking for ways to reduce estate taxes.  To make a legal declaration in a will about our wishes for a monetary gift from our property, to a qualified 501 9 (c)(3) charity, we can reduce or eliminate estate taxes.  This not only allows a tax reduction, it further permits us to...

I am told that the words “poor, starving, and homeless” are inappropriate and offensive.  The correct terms are “economically challenged, food insecurity, without shelter”.

Who comes up with these euphemisms?  Straightforward and honest language is my preferred form of speaking and writing and I refuse to use the less offensive...
