Spay/Neuter
Posted: 9/29/2010 by Genevieve Frederick
"The clients are very reluctant to neuter their animals in spite of no charge and refusal of future service without." This statement is from a veterinarian that recieved a grant from Pets of the Homeless
We ask for reader suggestions. How can we reach those who hesitate to spay or neuter their pets? This is a hot topic worldwide. If you have answers, we want to hear from you.

We need to some how make spay and neuter a law unless you are registered to breed. If you are a breeder you need to take classes. People must take responsibility in their own animals. I just adopted 2 strays found in Tennessee while up there for vacation. Come to find out one of them has been shot and the bullet is still In his leg. What is this world coming to.

I coordinate a project that gives pet food to homeless and low income people. Hmoe Van Pet Care Project. We also give spay/neuter referrals and education. There is huge resistance to spay/neuter. The best result we ever had was when numerous dog owners lived close together in a highly populated "tent city." There were 17 dogs, and one by one we nudged and nagged and kept on and finally all had enrolled in our local free veterinary clinic and all were spayed or neutered. We credit peer group pressure, and are sad to say that when that area was forcibly evacuated by local law enforcement, the dogs and people scattered, most dogs were lost and eventually went to foster care and new homes. It was very sad, but it was to the benefit of the dogs that they had already been spayed and neutered and to the benefit of the owners that they knew they had done the right thing.
